KNOWLEDGE – 13 LAYERS: Julian Lee’s work on the subject of knowledge involves Sandy in a ritual-like performance based on the traditions of geisha: the entertainer. In Lee’s stylised video work, Sandy is depicted dressing in 13 layers of clothing passed to her as a geisha would in an act of self-transformation. The process is then reversed with Sandy removing the layers of clothing and handing them back. This process underpins the receipt of knowledge and the way the individual combines them into a whole, or alternatively, deconstructing the information through an ‘un-shedding” of the skin.
