From Artistic Identity to Creative Studio

Riddick Douglas Ning

Profile

Riddick Douglas Ning is a Hong Kong–born photographer and director currently based in London. His creative practice centres on concept-driven visual storytelling, supported by extensive commercial experience in fashion, editorial, and moving images. He is pursuing an MA in Photography at the Royal College of Art to further expand his artistic direction.

In 2023, Ning paid a poetic tribute to Hong Kong with Where The Firework Dies, a project that captures the city’s transformation through an alternative narrative. The work showcases a wide range of photographic techniques and visual styles, successfully crowdfunded over HK$280,000, and resulted in his first photobook and a one‑month solo exhibition. It received extensive media coverage across newspapers, magazines, and digital platforms.

Ning first gained international recognition with Hong Kong Happenings in 2009, an award‑winning series that intertextualises iconic paintings to reflect on social phenomena and contemporary culture. The work won the Creative Media Award (Photography) and was exhibited at Les Rencontres d’Arles (France) and the Pingyao International Photography Festival (China).

With over a decade of experience as a photography lecturer at the Hong Kong Design Institute, Ning has also delivered guest lectures and artist talks at institutions and universities, including the University for the Creative Arts (UK), the School of Creative Media at City University of Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong Film Archive. He shares his academic insight and creative practice not only through teaching but also through his written contributions, including photography columns for the Hong Kong Economic Times and Men’s Uno.
