Prologue
In 2020, the pandemic struck and Hong Kong came to a standstill. Like everyone else, I was cooped up at home with my schedule emptied out. It gave me time to think hard about the meaning of photography and its purpose in our troubled times. Having served various clients and spent years telling their stories through images, I decided to grab the opportunity to create an independent project using my own voice alone.
By chance I ran into some fireworks photos I took before COVID. The inspiration grew as I slowly collected my thoughts over the years and worked out the story of “The Land of Fireworks” with seven pieces, which utilised different genres and techniques to capture the process from blossom to decay.
The concept evolved. Some ideas stood the test of time while others lost their relevance quickly. After the passage of four years, a fresh approach is needed to tell the story. So much has changed with history updated, experience enriched and identity transformed. Prophecies were swept away by time and overtaken by new developments. Some photos are removed and new ones are made. “The Land of Fireworks” is the result of this years-long process.
