Riddick Douglas Ning

Riddick Douglas Ning is a Hong Kong-born photographer and director, currently based in London. His creative practice centres on thoughtful concepts and visual storytelling, supported by years of commercial experience in fashion, editorial, and moving images. He is currently pursuing an MA in Photography at the Royal College of Art to expand his creative direction further.

Douglas’s latest project, Where The Firework Dies (2023), is a poetic tribute to Hong Kong, capturing its transformation through an alternative narrative. The work ambitiously showcases a wide range of photographic techniques and visual styles, and was successfully crowdfunded with over HK$280,000. It led to the release of his first photobook and a one-month solo exhibition, receiving extensive media coverage across newspapers, magazines, and social platforms.

He first gained international recognition with Hong Kong Happenings (2009), an award-winning series that intertextualises famous paintings to reflect on social phenomena and contemporary cultural issues. The work won the Creative Media Award (Photography) in 2009 and was exhibited at Les Rencontres d’Arles (France) and Pingyao International Photography Festival (China).

In 2017, Douglas founded Ridiculous Studio, a creative production house based in Hong Kong. He has directed music videos, worked as a film still photographer, and contributed to advertising campaigns and magazine editorials. His commercial collaborations include international fashion brands such as Chanel, Emporio Armani, and Maison Margiela Paris.

With over a decade of teaching experience, including serving as a photography lecturer at a tertiary institution in Hong Kong, Douglas brings a rich blend of academic insight and creative practice to his work. He has contributed photography columns to Hong Kong Economic Times and Men’s Uno, and has been invited as a guest speaker at various institutions, including the Hong Kong Film Archive, sharing his perspectives on visual culture and photographic technique.
