Wing Studies

I magnify wings into bursts of brilliance, attempt to blend science and art through typology photography, and create a photographic monograph based on their colours and patterns. My monograph of wings takes the form of a pull-out page, with a spread emperor butterfly to connect the poster to the photo book, providing an extraordinary perspective.
The first few entries on the top row are devoted to the alpine black swallowtail with its wings as vibrant as fireworks blooming in a pitch-dark sky. The colourful scales cluster to reveal all sorts of streaks. I arrange the specimen the way I group jigsaw pieces by colour and shape, and establish connections between photos by the veins on the wings. What appears as wings up close is morphed into a macro perspective when viewed from a distance.
