In 2018, Hong Kong fashion designer Kenax Leung released his SS18 collection, which explored a cyberpunk aesthetic. For an editorial feature in Ming’s magazine, he invited photographer Riddick Douglas Ning to create a series of images responding to the theme of technological evolution. The collaboration brought together Leung’s vision for the collection and Ning’s interest in science‑fiction ideas such as teleportation portals and data transmission. Leung developed the styling and overall look for the shoot, and Ning shaped the conceptual direction and executed the photography.

Ning has long been fascinated by slit‑scan photography, a progressive scanning technique that creates a strong sense of futurism often associated with science‑fiction imagery. By capturing images across an extended duration, slit‑scan photography generates visual distortions that suggest the bending of space and time, echoing cinematic depictions of instantaneous travel through portals or data streams.

By integrating slit‑scan methods into the series, Ning sought to visualise digital evolution and the seamless integration of technology into contemporary life. The elongated, fluid distortions characteristic of slit‑scan imagery evoke the smooth and continuous transmission of data often depicted in sci‑fi narratives. This approach not only complements the cyberpunk theme of Leung’s SS18 collection but also adds conceptual depth, prompting reflections on technological advancement and the future relationship between humans and machines.
